Why Might an Air Conditioning Installation Need a Condensate Pump?

Condensate has to go somewhere. Here's why gravity drainage is preferred, and when a condensate pump becomes necessary instead.

Where the water comes from

Air conditioning cools air by passing it over a cold coil inside the indoor unit, and just like a cold drink on a warm day, moisture in the air condenses on that cold surface. This water collects in a tray beneath the coil and needs to be drained away continuously while the system is cooling.

On a warm, humid day, a system can produce a surprising amount of condensate, so this drainage has to be reliable and continuous, not something that can be left to chance.

Gravity drainage is preferred

Wherever possible, we drain condensate using gravity: a pipe running continuously downhill from the indoor unit to a suitable outdoor discharge point, or occasionally an internal waste connection. Gravity drainage has no moving parts, needs no power, and simply works as long as the fall and route are correct.

This is our preferred method because it's the simplest, most reliable, and quietest way to deal with condensate, and it's what we specify whenever the property layout allows it.

When gravity drainage isn't possible

Sometimes the indoor unit's position makes gravity drainage impractical. This can happen when the unit is mounted on an internal wall a long way from an external drainage point, when the drain route would need to run uphill at any point, or when the only suitable discharge point is higher than the unit itself.

In these situations, a condensate pump becomes necessary to lift the water against gravity to a point where it can drain away.

How a condensate pump works

A condensate pump sits near the indoor unit and collects water in a small reservoir. Once the water reaches a certain level, a float switch triggers the pump, which pushes the water through a smaller-bore pipe up and along to a suitable discharge point.

This lets condensate be moved to locations that would be completely unreachable by gravity alone, which is genuinely useful in awkward property layouts.

The trade-offs of using a pump

A pump introduces a mechanical, powered component into what would otherwise be a passive drainage system. It makes a brief pumping noise each time it activates, which some people notice more than others depending on where the indoor unit is located.

It's also another item that needs occasional maintenance and can eventually fail, at which point condensate can back up and potentially overflow if not caught in time. For this reason, we avoid specifying a pump where gravity drainage is genuinely achievable.

Common condensate pump types

There are several well-established condensate pump products used across the industry, including units such as the Sauermann Delta Pack and Aspen Mini Lime ranges. Each has its own characteristics in terms of size, pumping capacity and how it's fitted, and the right choice depends on the specific installation rather than any single product being universally the best option.

We select the pump appropriate to the installation based on the indoor unit, the required lift and pipe run, and where it needs to be sited, rather than defaulting to one brand for every job.

Keeping a pump reliable

Where a pump is fitted, we make sure it's accessible for future maintenance and explain to customers what to look out for, such as any unusual noise or signs of water marks near the unit that might indicate a blockage or fault developing.

Routine servicing includes checking the condensate system, whether gravity or pumped, to catch any issues before they cause a leak.
