Understanding SEER and SCOP Ratings
Air conditioning specifications are full of ratings and abbreviations. SEER and SCOP are two of the most useful, once you know what they're actually measuring.

Why efficiency ratings exist
Air conditioning units are rated for energy efficiency so that buyers can compare how much cooling or heating output a system delivers relative to the electricity it consumes. Two units with identical cooling capacity can have quite different running costs if their efficiency ratings differ, which is why these figures matter beyond the headline specification of a unit.
SEER and SCOP are the two ratings you'll most commonly see quoted for residential and light commercial systems, covering cooling and heating performance respectively.
What SEER measures
SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, and it measures cooling efficiency across a typical cooling season rather than at a single fixed condition. This seasonal approach gives a more realistic picture of real-world performance than a single-point efficiency test, since outdoor temperatures vary considerably through a cooling season.
A higher SEER figure indicates a system that delivers more cooling for the same amount of electricity across a typical season, which generally translates into lower running costs for cooling, other factors being equal.
What SCOP measures
SCOP stands for Seasonal Coefficient of Performance, and it's the equivalent seasonal efficiency rating for heating mode. Since heat pump performance varies with outside temperature, SCOP reflects performance across a range of conditions through a typical heating season rather than a single mild-weather test.
For anyone considering using air conditioning for heating, particularly in Surrey's cooler months, SCOP is arguably more relevant to real-world running costs than a cooling-only rating.
How to actually use these figures when comparing units
A unit with an excellent efficiency rating that's been incorrectly sized for the room, or poorly installed, won't deliver the efficiency implied by its rating in practice. The rating describes the equipment under test conditions, not a guarantee for every installation.
Practical points when comparing SEER and SCOP between models
- Compare figures for units of a similar cooling or heating capacity, since ratings alone don't reflect output
- Treat SEER as most relevant if the system will mainly be used for cooling
- Treat SCOP as most relevant if heating performance in winter matters to you
- Remember that real-world efficiency also depends on installation quality, sizing and maintenance, not the rating alone
Where to find these ratings
Manufacturers publish SEER and SCOP figures in product datasheets and on the energy label that accompanies most residential air conditioning units sold in the UK and Europe. If you're comparing specific models, these documents are the most reliable source, rather than marketing summaries that sometimes simplify or omit the detail.
