How Long Air Conditioning Lasts and When to Replace It
Air conditioning doesn't fail overnight in most cases. Here are the signs a system is approaching the end of its useful life, and how to weigh up repair against replacement.

Typical lifespan of an air conditioning system
Most well-installed and properly maintained residential air conditioning systems last somewhere in the region of ten to fifteen years, though this varies considerably based on usage patterns, installation quality, exposure to the elements, and how consistently the system has been serviced. A neglected system can fail well before this range, while a well cared for one can sometimes run reliably beyond it.
Rather than relying purely on age, it's more useful to look at the actual condition and behaviour of a system when deciding whether replacement is approaching.
Rising repair frequency
A system that needed no attention for years but has suddenly needed two or three call-outs in a short space of time is often signalling that components are wearing out more broadly rather than one isolated part failing. This pattern is worth taking seriously, since further faults often follow as other ageing components reach the end of their life around the same time.
Declining performance despite servicing
If cooling or heating output has noticeably declined even after a proper service, including a filter clean, coil clean and refrigerant check, this points towards genuine mechanical wear rather than something maintenance can resolve. Compressors in particular lose efficiency as they age, and a compressor nearing failure often shows up as steadily reduced performance before it fails outright.
Refrigerant type and phase-out considerations
Some older refrigerants have been phased out or restricted under environmental regulations, which can make refrigerant for repairs to older systems harder to obtain and more expensive over time. If your system uses an older refrigerant type and needs a significant repair, it's worth asking your engineer whether ongoing refrigerant availability is likely to be a long-term issue for that particular unit.
Weighing up repair against replacement
There's no fixed rule for when repair stops making sense and replacement becomes the better option, since it depends on the specific fault, the age and condition of the rest of the system, and your own plans for the property. An honest assessment from an engineer during a diagnostic visit should set out the options rather than push towards either choice by default.
Questions worth asking before committing to a repair
- How old is the system, and how does that compare with typical lifespans for similar equipment?
- Is this an isolated fault or part of a wider pattern of recent issues?
- Does the unit use a refrigerant type that's being phased out or becoming harder to source?
- Would a new system offer a meaningful efficiency improvement over the current one?
- Is the cost of repair proportionate to the likely remaining life of the system?
What replacement involves
Replacing an air conditioning system isn't always a like-for-like swap, since technology, efficiency standards and available unit sizes change over the years a system has been in place. A replacement is a good opportunity to reassess whether the original sizing and positioning still suit the room as it's used today, particularly if the room's use has changed since the original installation.
Getting the most from a system before replacement is needed
Regular servicing remains the single most effective way to extend a system's useful life, since it catches minor issues, such as a struggling condensate pump or a slightly low refrigerant charge, before they place additional strain on other components. A well maintained system installed correctly at the outset gives you the best chance of reaching, or exceeding, its typical expected lifespan.
