Air Conditioning Error Codes Explained
A flashing code or letter combination on your air conditioning display can look alarming, but most codes point to a specific, identifiable fault category.

Why error codes exist
Modern air conditioning systems constantly monitor their own operation, and when a reading falls outside expected parameters, the control board displays an error code rather than continuing to run blindly. This is a helpful design feature, since it gives an engineer a starting point for diagnosis rather than having to test every component from scratch.
Codes are manufacturer-specific, so the same letter and number combination can mean different things on different brands, which is why we always confirm the exact model before interpreting a code.
Where to find what your code means
Most manufacturers list error codes in the unit's installation or service manual, and increasingly on their website or support pages. If you have the model number, a quick search alongside the exact code shown can often confirm the general fault category, though this is only a starting point rather than a full diagnosis.
Keep in mind that the same displayed code can sometimes relate to more than one possible underlying cause, so identifying the code is useful context rather than a complete answer on its own.
Common categories of fault behind error codes
Some of these, like a drainage float switch trip, can occasionally be resolved by clearing an obvious blockage, but many require diagnostic testing with proper equipment to confirm the actual cause.
Broad categories most error codes fall into
- Communication faults between indoor and outdoor units
- Sensor faults, such as a temperature sensor reading outside expected range
- Refrigerant-related faults, including low pressure or overcurrent conditions
- Drainage faults, such as a float switch triggered by a full condensate tray
- Fan or motor faults, where a component isn't responding as expected
What you can safely check yourself
Before assuming the worst, it's worth checking that the outdoor unit isn't blocked, the filter is clean, and there isn't an obvious drainage backup causing a float switch trip. Power-cycling the unit by turning it off at the isolator, waiting a short period, and turning it back on can sometimes clear a transient fault, though if the code returns immediately it points to a genuine underlying issue rather than a one-off glitch.
What not to attempt yourself
Codes relating to refrigerant pressure, compressor faults or electrical components should not be investigated by opening up the unit yourself. These require specialist testing equipment, in some cases F-Gas certification, and carry a genuine electrical or refrigerant safety risk if handled without proper training.

Having this information ready when you call speeds up the diagnostic process, since an engineer can sometimes narrow down the likely cause before even arriving on site.

- The exact code or flashing sequence shown, including how many times a light flashes if there's no text display
- The make and model of the unit, usually on a label on the indoor or outdoor unit
- When the fault started and whether it's constant or intermittent
- Any recent changes, such as a power cut, other electrical work, or a season change
