Why we won't give you a single price here

It would be easy to publish a headline price for air conditioning installation, but it wouldn't be honest. The cost of a system varies so much between properties that a generic figure ends up either misleading people with a smaller job or putting off someone with a straightforward one. What we can do is explain, in plain terms, the factors that actually move the price up or down, so that when you do get a survey and quote, you understand what you're looking at.

Every quote we provide follows an on-site survey, because guessing at pipe runs, wall construction or electrical capacity from a phone call rarely gives an accurate picture.

The size and number of units needed

The most obvious driver of cost is how many rooms you want to cool and how large those rooms are. A single bedroom served by one indoor unit and one outdoor condenser is a fundamentally different job to a multi-split system feeding four or five rooms from shared outdoor equipment.

Unit capacity also has to match the room, not just its floor area but factors like ceiling height, glazing, aspect and how many people typically use the space. An undersized unit will struggle in a sunny loft room, while an oversized one can be inefficient and short-cycle, so correct sizing genuinely affects both the installation cost and how well the system performs afterwards.

Pipe length and routing

Refrigerant pipework runs between the indoor and outdoor units, and the further apart they are, the more pipe, insulation and labour is involved. A ground-floor room with an outdoor unit just outside the wall is a much shorter run than a top-floor bedroom with the condenser sited at ground level round the side of the house.

Routing pipework through walls, floor voids or lofts also takes more time than a simple direct wall penetration, and properties with solid walls, thick external insulation or awkward internal layouts can add to this.

Where the outdoor unit can go

Outdoor unit position affects both the practicality and the cost of a job. A unit that can sit on a simple wall bracket close to the indoor unit is quicker to fit than one that needs a ground-standing frame, additional brackets, or noise and airflow considerations because of nearby windows or boundaries.

In flats, terraces with limited garden space, or properties in a conservation area, the available positions for an outdoor unit can be more restricted, which sometimes means longer pipe runs or additional mounting work.

Electrical work

Most residential air conditioning units need a dedicated electrical supply, and whether your consumer unit has spare capacity and correctly rated protection makes a real difference to the scope of work. Some installations need only a straightforward spur from an existing circuit, while others require additional circuits or consumer unit upgrades.

This is assessed during the survey by looking at your existing electrics, and it's one of the areas where costs can vary most between two seemingly similar properties.

Access and building type

How easy it is to get equipment and materials to the installation point matters more than people often expect. Ground-floor rooms with clear access are quicker to work in than top-floor rooms in a period property with tight stairwells, or lofts with restricted headroom.

The construction of the walls also plays a part. Solid brick, cavity wall, timber frame and rendered elevations all behave slightly differently when it comes to fixing brackets and routing pipework, and this is factored into the time a job takes.

Condensate drainage

Every indoor unit produces condensate as it cools the air, and this needs a route to drain away safely, either by gravity to an existing outlet or via a condensate pump where gravity drainage isn't possible. Rooms a long way from a suitable drainage point, or on upper floors, sometimes need a pump, which adds to the scope of the installation.
