Does Air Conditioning Need a Separate Electrical Supply?
It's a fair question with no one-size-fits-all answer. Here's what actually determines the electrical requirements of an air conditioning installation.

There's no single answer
People often ask whether air conditioning needs its own dedicated electrical circuit, hoping for a straightforward yes or no. In reality, it depends on several factors specific to the equipment being installed and the property's existing electrical installation, so it's genuinely assessed on a case-by-case basis.
This is one of the reasons a proper survey matters: the electrical requirement isn't something that can be reliably guessed without looking at both the proposed air conditioning system and the existing consumer unit.
What manufacturer instructions specify
Every air conditioning unit comes with manufacturer installation instructions that specify electrical requirements, including recommended cable size, circuit protection rating, and in many cases whether an isolator switch is required at the outdoor unit.
We follow these manufacturer requirements as the baseline for any installation, since they're based on the specific electrical characteristics of that unit.
Unit capacity plays a major role
Larger systems, particularly multi-split systems serving several rooms, draw more current than a small single-room unit. This affects the cable size needed and the rating of the protective device, and in many cases points towards a dedicated circuit simply to handle the load safely.
Smaller single-room systems sometimes have a more modest electrical demand, but this still needs to be properly assessed rather than assumed.
The condition of the existing installation matters
An older consumer unit, or one that's already fully loaded with existing circuits, may have limited capacity for an additional load without upgrades. We check the condition and capacity of the existing electrical installation as part of the survey.
In some properties, the consumer unit and existing wiring comfortably accommodate a new circuit for air conditioning. In others, some upgrade work is needed first to do the job safely and in line with current regulations.
Cable route and length
The distance and route between the consumer unit and the air conditioning equipment affects cable sizing, since voltage drop increases over longer cable runs. A straightforward, short run has different requirements to a run across a large property or up several floors.
We plan the cable route during the survey alongside the pipework route, since both often travel similar paths through the building.
Protective devices
Air conditioning circuits need appropriately rated protective devices, such as circuit breakers, matched to the cable and the equipment's electrical characteristics. This is a technical calculation rather than a fixed rule that applies to every installation.
Getting this right protects both the equipment and the property, and is checked and certified as part of the electrical work.
