Using Air Conditioning for Heating in Winter
Most modern air conditioning systems double as heating in the colder months. Here's how to get the best from that function through a UK winter.

Air conditioning isn't just a summer purchase
It's a common misconception that air conditioning is only useful in summer. Most residential and commercial systems installed today are heat pumps capable of running in reverse to provide heating, which means the same equipment that cools a room in July can be a genuinely useful heat source through autumn, winter and spring.
Understanding how to use that heating function well makes a real difference to comfort and running costs through the colder months.
How heat pump heating performs as temperatures drop
Heat pumps extract heat from outside air, and there is less available heat to extract as outside temperatures fall, meaning the system generally works harder, and less efficiently, on very cold nights than on a mild fifteen-degree autumn day. This doesn't mean the system stops working, but it does mean expectations should be realistic during the coldest snaps.
Most systems installed for UK conditions are rated to operate down to fairly low outside temperatures, but it's worth checking the specific operating range of your unit if you're relying on it for heating through a particularly cold winter.
Setting a sensible target temperature
As with cooling, setting the heating target several degrees higher than actually needed doesn't heat the room faster, it just means the system runs longer to reach and hold that higher target. A moderate, consistent target temperature, adjusted with a timer around your daily routine, tends to be more comfortable and more efficient than large manual swings.
Using timers and scheduling around occupancy
Practical scheduling tips for winter heating
- Set a lower background temperature for unoccupied hours rather than switching off completely, since restarting from cold uses more energy than maintaining a gentle base level
- Use timers to bring rooms up to temperature shortly before they're needed rather than running continuously
- Close doors to unheated rooms so conditioned air isn't lost to spaces that don't need it
- Bleed and balance any radiators in the same room if you're running both systems together, so neither is fighting the other's thermostat
Defrost cycles and why they happen
In cold, humid conditions, frost can form on the outdoor unit's coil, and the system periodically runs a defrost cycle to clear it, which can briefly appear to blow cooler air or pause heating output. This is completely normal behaviour for a heat pump in winter conditions and not a fault, though it's worth knowing about so it doesn't cause unnecessary concern.
Keeping the outdoor unit clear in winter
Outdoor units need clear airflow year-round, and in winter this extends to keeping the area free of fallen leaves, snow build-up, and ice. A unit with restricted airflow due to snow or debris will struggle to perform its defrost cycle properly and can run less efficiently as a result. Avoid covering the unit completely, since most are designed to be left exposed and covering can trap moisture.
When heat pump heating isn't the right primary source
For a well-insulated single room used regularly, air conditioning heating can work very well through winter. For heating an entire poorly insulated property with no other heating source, relying solely on air conditioning may not deliver the comfort level expected, particularly during the coldest weeks, and this is worth discussing honestly during a survey rather than assuming one system suits every situation.
Getting the most from winter heating mode
A system that's been serviced regularly, with a clean filter and clear outdoor unit, will generally perform better in heating mode through winter than one that's neglected. If you've noticed heating performance dropping off notably compared with previous winters, that's worth investigating rather than assuming it's simply the cold weather.
