Air Conditioning Heating vs Gas Central Heating

Many homeowners in Surrey now have both gas central heating and a heat pump-based air conditioning system in the same room. Here's how the two compare in practice.

Two different ways of heating a room

Gas central heating warms water in a boiler and circulates it through radiators, which then heat the air in a room largely through convection and radiant heat. Air conditioning used in heating mode is typically a heat pump, which extracts heat from the outside air, even when it's cold outside, and delivers it into the room as warm air blown from the indoor unit.

Both approaches can heat a room effectively, but they behave differently, and which suits a given space depends on the building, existing heating and how the room is used.

How each system responds to demand

Radiators tend to provide a steadier, more background warmth that continues to radiate heat for a while after the boiler stops firing, which some people find more comfortable in living spaces used for long periods. Air conditioning heating can respond more quickly to a change in set temperature, since it's blowing conditioned air directly into the room rather than warming it via a metal radiator.

For a room that's only occupied intermittently, such as a home office or a converted loft used occasionally, the faster response of air conditioning heating can be useful, since you're not waiting for a whole heating circuit to warm through.

Efficiency and how heat pumps actually work

A heat pump moves existing heat from outside air into the building rather than creating heat by burning fuel, which is why heat pumps, including air conditioning units running in heating mode, can be more efficient than direct electric heating. Efficiency does drop as outside temperatures fall, so performance on a mild autumn day is generally better than on a very cold winter night.

Gas boilers convert fuel to heat fairly consistently regardless of outside temperature, though modern boilers vary in efficiency depending on age, condition and how well the heating system as a whole is set up.

Zoned control versus whole-house heating

Because each indoor air conditioning unit can typically be controlled independently, it lends itself to heating individual rooms without running the whole central heating system, which some households find useful for occasional or single-room use.

Where zoned air conditioning heating tends to suit well

  • Rooms used at different times by different household members
  • Extensions, loft conversions or garden rooms not well served by the existing heating circuit
  • Spaces that need occasional quick heating rather than constant background warmth
  • Properties where running full central heating for one occupied room feels wasteful

Where gas central heating still has advantages

For whole-house heating across many rooms, an existing gas central heating system with radiators throughout is often already well suited to the building and doesn't need replacing purely because air conditioning has been installed elsewhere. Many of our customers keep their gas heating for general household warmth and use air conditioning for cooling in summer, with heating mode as a useful extra rather than a full replacement.

Boiler-based systems can also serve hot water alongside heating, which air conditioning does not.

Running both systems in the same home

There's no conflict in having gas central heating and air conditioning in the same property. Many homes we work with use gas heating for general warmth through the colder months and rely on air conditioning primarily for summer cooling, with the heating function used occasionally for a specific room, such as an extension that isn't well served by existing radiators.

What to consider before deciding

If you're weighing up whether to extend existing radiators into a new space or install air conditioning with heating capability instead, it's worth thinking about how the room will actually be used, whether it needs constant background warmth or occasional quick heating, and what the existing heating system can realistically support without significant additional work.
