Where Can an Outdoor Air Conditioning Unit Be Installed?
The outdoor unit is often the trickiest part of an air conditioning installation to plan. Here's what we consider when choosing its position.

Why outdoor unit position matters
The indoor unit tends to get all the attention during an air conditioning quote, but the outdoor condenser unit is just as important to get right. Its position affects noise, airflow efficiency, pipe run length, how easy it is to service, and how it looks from the street or garden.
Get it wrong and you can end up with a unit that's noisy in the bedroom above it, awkward to access for annual servicing, or exposed to poor airflow that reduces performance. We survey every property individually rather than defaulting to the same spot every time.
Common mounting options
There are a handful of standard ways to site an outdoor unit, and which one suits your property depends on wall construction, available ground space, and how far the unit needs to be from the indoor unit it serves.
Typical outdoor unit positions
- Wall-mounted on brackets, usually at first-floor level or above a single-storey extension roof
- Ground-mounted on a concrete or plastic condenser pad at the side or rear of the property
- On a flat roof, where access and structural loading allow
- Within a rear or side garden area, screened from view where practical
- On a balcony or terrace for flats, subject to lease and freeholder permission
Wall-mounted units
Wall brackets are a popular choice because they keep the unit off the ground, away from garden work and clear of standing water. They need a wall capable of taking the weight and vibration of a running compressor, so we check the construction before recommending this route.
We also think carefully about which room sits behind the wall. A unit mounted directly below a bedroom window, for example, isn't ideal even though modern units are quiet, so we'll often suggest an alternative position a metre or two along the wall instead.
Ground-mounted units
Where there's suitable space, a ground-mounted unit on a level, stable base is often the simplest option. It keeps servicing straightforward and avoids any question over wall loading, but it does need to be positioned where it won't be blocked by fences, planting, or stored items over time.
We always allow clearance around the unit for air to flow freely in and out, because a condenser that's boxed in by trellis or overgrown shrubs will work harder and less efficiently than one with open airflow.
Flat roofs and balconies
Flat roofs can work well, particularly on extensions, but we need to check the roof structure can take the load and that there's a safe, permanent way to access the unit for future servicing. A unit that can only be reached with a ladder over a fragile roof covering isn't a sensible long-term solution.
For flats, balcony installations are sometimes possible but usually require the freeholder's or management company's agreement first, since the outdoor unit and any pipework will typically be visible from outside the demise.
Noise, neighbours and boundaries
Even a quiet modern outdoor unit produces some running noise, so we try to avoid siting it hard against a neighbour's fence line right next to their patio doors or bedroom window if there's a reasonable alternative. It's a courtesy that avoids disputes later on.
Manufacturers publish minimum clearance distances from walls, fences and other obstructions to allow proper airflow and reduce noise build-up, and we follow these during the survey rather than treating them as optional.
Pipe run length and position together
The outdoor unit's position isn't chosen in isolation from the indoor unit. Refrigerant pipe runs have practical length and height-difference limits, so where the indoor unit needs to go often narrows down where the outdoor unit can sensibly sit, and vice versa.
Shorter, tidier pipe runs are generally better for performance and appearance, so during the survey we look at the whole route from indoor unit to outdoor unit before confirming either position.
What we check on survey
Before recommending a position, we look at wall or roof construction, available ground space, proximity to bedrooms and neighbouring properties, access for future servicing, drainage for any condensate, and how the finished installation will look.
