Why garden rooms often need dedicated attention

Garden rooms are typically built as standalone structures with large areas of glazing, which lets in plenty of natural light but can also lead to noticeable overheating during sunny periods, particularly in rooms with bifold or floor-to-ceiling doors. At the other end of the year, garden rooms with limited insulation compared with the main house can also feel cold and draughty in winter.

The amount and orientation of glazing has a significant effect on how much cooling capacity a garden room needs. A room with a south-facing wall of glass will heat up more through the day than one with smaller, shaded windows, and this is factored into the heat load calculation during the survey.

Insulation and winter heating

Garden rooms vary considerably in build quality and insulation standard. Well-insulated rooms retain heat more effectively, while lighter-weight structures may lose heat more quickly, which affects how much heating capacity is needed and how efficiently the room can be maintained at a comfortable temperature in winter.

Sizing the system

Sizing a garden room system takes into account floor area, ceiling height, glazing area, insulation standard and how the room is used, for example whether it houses equipment such as computers or exercise machines that add their own heat. This ensures the system recommended is appropriate rather than a standard size applied regardless of the room.

Outdoor unit position and electrical supply

Since garden rooms are often positioned some distance from the main house, we consider where the outdoor unit can be sited close to the garden room itself, and what electrical supply is already available to the structure. Where the garden room has its own electrical supply this can simplify installation, though this is confirmed during the survey along with pipe run and drainage requirements.
