What a multi-split system is

A multi-split system uses one outdoor unit to serve several indoor units, rather than pairing a separate outdoor unit with every room. This can suit properties where more than one room needs air conditioning but there is limited space, or limited appetite, for multiple outdoor units on the exterior of the building.

Each indoor unit can generally be controlled independently, meaning one room can be cooling while another is switched off or set to a different temperature, subject to the specific system's capability.
