Single-Split or Multi-Split Air Conditioning: Which Is Best?
Choosing between single-split and multi-split air conditioning depends on how many rooms you need to cover and how they're arranged. Here's how to decide.

The basic difference
A single-split system is the simplest configuration: one indoor unit connected to one outdoor unit, serving a single room. A multi-split system uses one larger outdoor condenser connected to two or more indoor units, each serving a different room, so multiple spaces can be cooled or heated while keeping the amount of external equipment to a minimum.
Both are well-established, reliable configurations, and neither is inherently better than the other; the right choice depends on how many rooms you want to cover, their layout, and how you plan to use them.
When a single-split system makes sense
If you only need to cool or heat one room, such as a main bedroom or a home office, a single-split system is usually the simplest and most straightforward option. It also gives you the flexibility to add further single-split systems later if your needs grow, without being tied to a specific multi-split configuration from the outset.
Single-split systems are also worth considering when the rooms you want to cool are in different parts of the house, far enough apart that a shared outdoor unit and long pipe runs to each room wouldn't be practical.
When a multi-split system makes more sense
Multi-split systems come into their own when you want to cool or heat several rooms and would rather have one outdoor unit than several separate ones cluttering an external wall or garden. This is particularly relevant on properties with limited outdoor space, in flats with restrictions on the number of external units allowed, or where the appearance of multiple outdoor condensers is a concern.
They also make sense where rooms needing air conditioning are reasonably close together, such as several bedrooms along the same side of a house, since this keeps pipe runs from each indoor unit to the shared outdoor condenser manageable.
Independent control between rooms
A common misconception is that multi-split systems mean every room runs at the same temperature. In practice, each indoor unit on a multi-split system is controlled independently, so one bedroom can be set cooler than another, or one room can be switched off while others run, in the same way as separate single-split systems would allow.
Outdoor unit size and capacity
The outdoor condenser for a multi-split system needs to be sized to handle the combined demand of all the indoor units it serves, which is why multi-split outdoor units tend to be larger than a single-split outdoor unit for one room. This sizing is worked out during survey based on the specific rooms and indoor units planned.
It's also worth knowing that not every indoor unit on a multi-split system can run at full output simultaneously in every configuration, which is a specification detail that depends on the exact equipment chosen, so we'll talk through what's realistic for your intended use.
Cost and future flexibility
Multi-split systems typically involve installing more of the infrastructure in one go, since indoor units and pipe runs to each room are usually planned and fitted together. Single-split systems installed one at a time can spread the cost over a longer period, though this can mean more separate outdoor units if you add several rooms over time.

If you're starting with just one room and are unsure about future plans, a single-split system keeps your options open.
