Air Conditioning for Conservatories: What to Consider
Conservatories are notorious for overheating. Here's what genuinely helps when fitting air conditioning into one, and what limits to expect.

Why conservatories are such a common request
Conservatories are probably the single room type we get asked about air conditioning for most often, and it's not hard to see why. The combination of extensive glazing and, in many cases, a polycarbonate or glass roof means they can become genuinely too hot to use for large parts of the day in summer, sometimes even in relatively mild weather if the sun is out.
The same glazing that makes a conservatory feel bright and open is exactly what makes it hard to keep cool without mechanical help, which is why fans and blinds alone often aren't enough once temperatures rise.
Roof type makes a real difference
A conservatory with a solid, insulated roof performs very differently to one with the original glass or polycarbonate roof, and this affects how well air conditioning will be able to maintain a comfortable temperature. Solid-roofed conservatories retain cooled air more effectively, while a fully glazed roof continues to let in significant solar gain even while the system is running.
If your conservatory still has its original glazed roof and overheating is a major issue, it's worth being realistic that air conditioning will make a noticeable difference but may need to work harder than in a room with better roof insulation.
Sizing for a conservatory's specific conditions
Conservatories need to be sized differently to a typical room of the same floor area, because the volume of glazing significantly increases solar heat gain compared with a room with standard windows. This is one of the clearest examples of why room dimensions alone don't determine the right unit size, and why a survey that accounts for glazing area and roof type matters.
Where the indoor unit can go
Conservatories often have limited solid wall space because most of the structure is glazed, which can restrict where an indoor unit can be mounted. In many cases, the wall shared with the main house, or a solid dwarf wall section, is the most practical location, and we look at this carefully during survey since it also affects how evenly the cooled air spreads through the room.
Getting pipework from conservatory to outdoor unit
Because conservatories are usually single-storey extensions, pipe runs to a nearby outdoor unit are often relatively short and straightforward compared with an upper-floor installation, provided there's a practical route through the shared wall or a nearby external wall. This is generally one of the more straightforward aspects of a conservatory installation.
Electrical considerations
As with any air conditioning installation, the conservatory's electrical supply needs to be checked for capacity to support a dedicated circuit. Some conservatories already have sockets and lighting circuits installed that may or may not have room for an additional air conditioning circuit, which we assess during survey.
Setting realistic expectations
Air conditioning can transform a conservatory from unusable in summer to genuinely comfortable, but the result depends heavily on the roof type, glazing and how well the space is otherwise insulated. We're always upfront about this during survey, since a conservatory with a fully glazed roof and single glazing will always be a harder space to control than one with modern insulated glazing and a solid roof, regardless of the air conditioning unit fitted.
