Choosing Air Conditioning for a Garden Room
Garden rooms and outbuildings used as offices or gyms need air conditioning suited to their construction. Here's what makes them different to fit.

Garden rooms are a growing part of what we fit
Garden rooms have become a common feature of homes across Cheam and the wider Sutton area, used as home offices, gyms, studios and guest spaces. Because they're often built with large areas of glazing and lighter construction than the main house, they can heat up quickly in summer and cool down quickly in winter, which makes temperature control genuinely important rather than a luxury.
Construction affects the right approach
Garden rooms vary enormously in how they're built. Fully insulated, timber-framed structures with double glazing perform quite differently to lighter summerhouse-style buildings, and this affects both the unit size needed and how effectively it will maintain a comfortable temperature. A well-insulated garden room holds its temperature better once cooled or heated, while a poorly insulated one will need the system working harder and more continuously.
If you're planning a new garden room and know air conditioning is part of the plan, it's worth involving us or at least considering the insulation specification early, since retrofitting a system into a lightly built structure is more limited in what it can achieve compared with fitting it during construction.
Electrical supply to a detached structure
Because a garden room is a separate structure from the house, it needs its own electrical supply run out to it, usually via an armoured cable, before an air conditioning unit can be connected. If your garden room already has power for lighting and sockets, the existing supply's capacity needs checking to see whether it can also support an air conditioning unit or whether an upgraded supply is needed.
This is one of the first things we look at during a garden room survey, since it affects both feasibility and the overall scope of the job.
Positioning the outdoor unit
Garden rooms are often positioned near boundaries, fences or planting, which can limit where an outdoor condenser unit can practically sit. Airflow clearance around the outdoor unit is important for it to work efficiently, so we look at the space immediately around the garden room to find a position that balances practicality, noise and appearance.
In smaller gardens, the outdoor unit's position for the garden room also needs to be considered alongside any existing outdoor unit serving the main house, to avoid cluttering a small outdoor space.
Sizing for typical garden room use
Garden rooms used as home offices or gyms are often occupied for several hours a day, sometimes with additional heat from computer equipment or exercise activity, which is factored into how the unit is sized. A room used only occasionally as a guest space or occasional studio has different demands to one used as a full-time daily office.
Pipe routing for detached buildings
Because the outdoor unit for a garden room installation is typically sited very close to the structure itself, pipe runs are often shorter than for a loft or upper-floor room in the main house. This can make garden room installations more straightforward in that respect, though the electrical supply run tends to be the bigger consideration overall.

We'll look at insulation, electrical supply, and the practical space available for the outdoor unit before recommending a system.
