Air Conditioning Noise and Your Neighbours
Noise is one of the most common concerns raised before an air conditioning installation, particularly in terraced and semi-detached homes with close neighbours. Here's what actually affects it.

Why noise matters so much in residential settings
Cheam, Sutton and much of the surrounding area is made up of terraced and semi-detached housing with gardens close to neighbouring properties, which means outdoor unit noise is a genuinely reasonable thing to think about before installation. A unit that's perfectly acceptable in an isolated detached garden could feel intrusive positioned close to a neighbour's bedroom window.
This is one of the things we discuss as standard during a survey, rather than something that only comes up if a problem develops afterwards.
What actually determines outdoor unit noise
Manufacturers publish sound pressure or sound power figures for outdoor units, usually in decibels, which give a useful guide when comparing models, though actual perceived noise on site also depends heavily on positioning and mounting.
Main factors affecting how noisy an outdoor unit is
- The model itself, since sound output varies between manufacturers and unit sizes
- Fan speed, which typically increases as the system works harder to meet demand
- Mounting position and surface, since a poorly isolated wall bracket can transmit vibration into the building
- Distance and line of sight to neighbouring windows or outdoor seating areas
- Surrounding hard surfaces, fences or walls that can reflect or amplify sound
Positioning to reduce noise nuisance
Where possible, we try to avoid positioning an outdoor unit directly beneath a neighbour's bedroom window or immediately alongside a shared boundary fence, particularly for properties with close-set gardens. Ground-level positions on anti-vibration feet, away from hard reflective surfaces, generally perform better than units mounted high on a wall bracket close to a party wall.
There isn't always a perfect position available on every property, so positioning is often a case of finding the best realistic compromise between pipe run length, access, aesthetics and noise impact.
Anti-vibration mounts and isolation
Vibration transmitted through a wall bracket into the building structure can sometimes be more noticeable, particularly at night, than the airborne fan noise itself. Anti-vibration rubber mounts and correctly torqued brackets help reduce this, and it's a standard part of how we fit outdoor units rather than an optional upgrade.
Planning permission and permitted development limits
Most domestic air conditioning installations fall under permitted development rather than requiring full planning permission, but there are conditions around distance from a boundary and noise limits under permitted development rules, particularly for units close to a neighbouring property. We factor these considerations into the survey, though for anything unusual it's worth checking with your local planning authority directly.
If a neighbour raises a concern after installation
If a neighbour does raise a noise concern once a system is running, it's worth first checking the unit is operating normally rather than developing a fault, since a failing fan bearing or loose panel can genuinely increase noise output over time. If the noise is simply the unit's normal operation but still causing an issue, options can include adjusting operating schedules, adding acoustic screening, or in some cases relocating the unit, though this last option involves further work.
Choosing quieter equipment from the outset
If neighbour proximity is a particular concern for your property, it's worth mentioning this at the quotation stage, since some models are designed with lower outdoor sound output as a specific feature and may be worth the consideration even at a different price point.
